In India, a shocking incident occurred in which two teenage sisters were found dead while hanging from a tree.

Foreign media, including the Guardian and BBC, reported on the 15th (local time) that the bodies of 15-year-old and 17-year-old sisters living in Raheempur, Uttar Pradesh, northern India, were found hanging from a tree on the afternoon of the 14th.

Local police launched an investigation following the bereaved families' claims that the victims were kidnapped and sexually assaulted, and arrested six men living nearby on charges of sexual assault and murder.

According to a police investigation, the dead sisters were taken to a field, sexually assaulted by men, and then strangled to death. It has been confirmed that the body was hung from a tree after killing the sister to disguise the fact that the sister made an extreme choice on her own.

The sisters' mother reportedly claimed to local police that men on motorcycles tried to kidnap their daughters the previous day, and that she was also threatened to stop them.

Local police returned the sisters' bodies to the bereaved family, but said they would refuse to cremate the bodies until the Indian government promised prompt trial and compensation.

The two sisters belong to the lowest-class "Dalit" class, called untouchable people in Indian caste, which suffers from severe discrimination and violence in Indian society.

Earlier in 2020, a 19-year-old Dalit-class girl was murdered in Uttar Pradesh after being sexually assaulted, and in 2014, a teenage sister of Dalit-class was found hanging from a tree after being sexually assaulted in the same state.
